Ten days that never happened
The night Europe deleted ten dates, and the 341 years it took to agree. ← Calendar Contraptions
In Rome, Madrid, Lisbon and Warsaw, October 1582 is missing a piece. The decree said: after Thursday the 4th comes Friday the 15th. Ten dates — the 5th through the 14th — were never printed. No day was lost; the week ran straight through, Thursday to Friday. What changed was the labels. The trouble is that everyone else kept the old labels, some for another 341 years, so between 1582 and 1923 the question what day is it had a different answer on every side of a border. Every row below is one jurisdiction's law: the last day on the old calendar, the first day on the new, and the dates that were simply never printed there. (Weekdays computed, not transcribed: the seven-day week broke nowhere, ever.)

Why the calendar needed surgery
The Council of Nicaea fixed Easter to the spring equinox in AD 325, which the church took to be 21 March. But Julius Caesar's calendar gives every fourth year 366 days, which overcounts the real year — 365.2422 days, not 365.25 — by eleven minutes a year. Eleven minutes is nothing until you multiply: a full day every 128 years, and by the 1500s roughly ten days' worth since Nicaea. The equinox was arriving on 10 or 11 March, and Easter was drifting toward summer.
The repair was designed by Aloysius Lilius, a Calabrian doctor, and carried through after his death by the German mathematician Christopher Clavius, whose defense of the scheme ran to some 800 pages. Pope Gregory XIII signed it as the bull Inter gravissimas, dated 24 February 1582. The solar rule is the one every phone now obeys: leap years every four years, except century years not divisible by 400. That averages the year to 365.2425 days — good to about one day in three millennia. Lilius also fixed the moon: the church's 19-year cycle for finding Easter moons had drifted four days, and the reform corrects its epact by a day every 300 or 400 years, eight times in 2,500 years. A calendar repair, done properly, is two calendars deep.
The night ten dates vanished
The decree is one sentence of arithmetic: Thursday 4 October 1582 (old style) is followed by Friday 15 October 1582 (new style). The dates 5 through 14 October were never printed in Rome. No weekday was touched — that is the quiet, astonishing part. Through every jump on this page, from the pope's ten days to Alaska's date-line shuffle, the seven-day week ran unbroken: the week is the oldest calendar humanity never reformed. And the ten deleted days were not an arbitrary cut: they were exactly the error accumulated since Nicaea, restoring the equinox to where the fourth century had found it.
One more thing the bull could not do: command anyone. It bound the Church, but a calendar is a civil machine — each state had to pass its own law. That is where the story stops being astronomy.
"The pope has stolen ten days of our time"
Protestant Europe declined the correction on principle. In England, Elizabeth I's council had warmed to a commission's proposal to skip ten days — until the Anglican bishops argued that the pope was, in their reading of Daniel, the fourth great beast, and the Queen let the matter quietly drop. So the map filled in by confession: France went in December 1582 (Sunday the 9th became Monday the 20th); the Dutch provinces went province by province, from Brabant and Zeeland at Christmas 1582 to Drenthe in May 1701 — 118 years of two calendars inside one small country. The protestant German states and Denmark–Norway held out until 1700, and even then took only the solar half of the reform, computing Easter by Kepler's Rudolphine Tables — "the improved calendar," they called it, not the pope's — until finally adopting the Gregorian Easter in 1774. In Western Europe the very last holdouts were two Swiss villages, Schiers and Grüsch, which switched in 1812: 230 years after Rome.
Sweden prints a 30th of February
Sweden tried to be clever about it. Rather than lose eleven days at once, it would skip every leap day from 1700 to 1740 and drift over gently. The plan survived exactly one execution: the leap days of 1704 and 1708 were not skipped, leaving Sweden ten days behind the new calendar instead of the intended two. King Charles XII gave up and ordered a return to the old calendar — which meant re-inserting a leap day that had been skipped. Sweden therefore observed 30 February 1712, the only such date in any national calendar, and finally converted in one jump: Wednesday 17 February 1753 was followed by Thursday 1 March.
"Give us our eleven days"
Britain waited until 1752, by which time eleven days had to go: Wednesday 2 September was followed by Thursday 14 September. The same Act moved the legal New Year from 25 March to 1 January, which is why English documents from before 1752 can carry two year numbers — George Washington's birthday was written 11 February 1731 in the calendar his family used, and is 22 February 1732 in ours, eleven days and one year apart. (The clearest illustration of the whole mess may be William of Orange's voyage to England in 1688: he sailed from the Netherlands on 11 November, new style, and landed on the 5th — a crossing of four days that arrives six date-numbers before it left.)
And the famous riots? The story that Britons took to the streets shouting "Give us our eleven days" is almost certainly a myth: historians find no record of them, and the chief source is a satirical Hogarth election painting of about 1755, mocking the very idea. What people did notice was smaller and real — rent days moved, saints' days and birthdays landed on different dates, and pay and taxes occasionally landed eleven days early.
October came in November
East of that map, the drift kept growing. Russia switched only in 1918, when the Soviet decree ordered that Wednesday 31 January be followed by Thursday 14 February — thirteen days, gone. The civil consequence is a permanent footnote: the "October Revolution" of 25 October 1917 (old style) took place on 7 November. Bulgaria had gone in 1916, Romania in 1919, and Greece followed on 1 March 1923 — its decree expressly limited the reform to civil matters, leaving church feasts alone. Turkey adopted the numbering for civil use on 1 January 1926. From October 1582 to March 1923, the date depended on the border you were standing at.
Still thirteen days behind, on purpose
The correction is not finished, because the Julian calendar is still running — as a church calendar. The Orthodox churches that never took the reform keep Christmas on 25 December, old style, which lands on 7 January new style and will not budge until 2100, when it becomes 8 January. A "Revised Julian" calendar proposed in 1923 reconciles the two until 2800, and some churches took it. The gap itself is a slow ratchet: ten days at the reform, plus one more on 1 March of every century year that is a Julian leap year but not a Gregorian one — 1700, 1800, 1900, and next 2100. The day your grandmother's Russian birthday shifts again is 1 March 2100, when the gap becomes fourteen days.
What this page doesn't do
The live table treats each region as a single state with one switch night; in reality adoption was a patchwork of cities and provinces (the Dutch provinces took from 1582 to 1701; Switzerland spread over 230 years). Sweden's odd interim calendar of 1700–1712 is not modeled — the table treats it as plain Old Style until 1753, its essay above tells the true story. Alaska is not in the live table because its switch was half calendar, half geography: the Date Line moved at the same noon, so locals lived two Fridays in a row. "Old Style" here means the Julian calendar itself; it does not reconstruct the old English civil year that began on 25 March, so a date like "11 February 1731" in an English document is 1732 by this page's count. Dates read as New Style before 15 October 1582 are projections — the rules run backwards over days no civil authority used. And "today" means your device's own date: these are calendar dates, not instants.
